I’m not one of these “guru’s” who was born with great genetics…

I wasn’t someone who could easily build muscle, or burn fat. Actually, no matter what I did in the gym. No matter what sport I was playing, or what professional trainer or bodybuilder I was following, I couldn’t make any progress with my training.

I tried bodybuilding. I tried circuit training, powerlifting, and anything else that promised me big results. I tried paleo, low carb, high carb, high fat, Atkins etc… Still, nothing. Here I am in high school going into the 12th grade. I have very few pictures with my shirt off… I’m guessing you can see why?

By the time I reached my mid-twenties, I wasn’t where I wanted to be in life.

Originally, that’s what being skinny was to me… It led me to live a smaller life than what I wanted, or what I felt I had within me to live. Being skinny made me feel weak and helpless, and I’m not talking in the physical sense. Being overweight or fat may have the same effect on you.

I know it has on a lot of my clients, and even myself at one point in my life – but I’ll tell you about that in a bit.

When I finally did build the body I’d always wanted, I had more confidence, but I also had more energy, increased motivation, and a quiet confidence that came from accomplishing something that had eluded me for such a long time.

My transformation led me to:

  • Quit my job and start my own business.
  • Travel to countries, even on my own, that I’d never dreamed of visiting.
  • Live life on my own terms. Make my own rules. And CREATE my own future, and present…

What kicked my butt into another gear was the thought that this unconfident young man was going to be who I am for the rest of my life. That scared the crap out of me. This is the emotional reason that I wrote down when I first started my transformation.

Now, about that transformation…

The only reason why I’m now 185 pounds of ripped, athletic muscle, is because of a job I got right around the time I started boxing.

I had been fighting (boxing) and looking for work for a number of months when my Old Man introduced me to the owner of one of the best gyms in my city, who was also his close friend.

My Dad’s friend saw something in me that I hadn’t seen yet. He liked my work ethic, and gave me a job – which was more like a paid internship under his head trainer, a guy in charge of writing the programs for the dozens of professional athletes that trained in his facility.

This guy, who I’ll call my mentor, turned how I trained upside down. He showed me the myths that I was following daily, that held me back from building my ideal body. He took everything that I had been following and threw it out the window. And thank God that he did!

… Because that’s when I started to grew stronger, leaner, and help others do the same.

From that first day of apprenticing with him, I dedicated my life to helping others build their dream bodies. Here are 3 of the main Fat Loss Myths

Things you’re probably doing that are holding you back from burning any real amount of fat. These myths are keeping you from building the strong, ripped body you’ve always wanted.

Myth #1 To Burn Fat We Need Higher Reps

This is an embarrassing fact about the fitness industry:

When you get your certification, they take you through a course – no matter what certification you get. In this course they lay out how to help people reach certain goals. They (any certifying body) are preparing new trainers to enter gyms all over the world.

They’re also doing so by perpetuating myths like this one.powerhowse challenge

In the certification courses they break each training goal into a different rep category. Here’s the thing, no goal – whether it’s building muscle or burning fat – can be reached by focusing only on one rep range, or even once cadence. We need changes in both to see sustained progress.

Why?

Because our bodies adapt to the demands we place upon them. Doing the same training week after week will result in momentary progress, but from day 1, our bodies begin to get used to the workouts. It takes about 4 weeks for our bodies to completely adapt to the training, and our results plummet.

A recent study out of the University of Alabama pitted two groups of women against each other in a fat loss test.

Group #1: the High Rep/Endurance Group

Group #2: the Low Rep/Power Group

Group number one performed exercises at very high, endurance reps – like they tell you to do when getting your certification. While group number two performed only heavy, weight lifting exercises at lower reps. Both groups at the same foods.

At the end of the experiment, both groups had lost the same amount of weight. But the heavy weight lifting group (group #2) had lost MORE FAT.

The test showed that to lose fat, we need to be incorporating at least some heavy resistance training into our routines. This is a lesson my mentor taught me early on. And one that I’ve included into the PowerHowse Challenge, the solution that I’ll tell you about in a bit.

Myth #2 There’s One, Magic, Fat Loss Diet

The fat loss nutrition industry exists because they perpetuate fads. A fad is good for business because it creates a buying frenzy. You can hear it at any coffee shop or watering cooler…

“Have you tried the ‘so and so diet’? I’ve lost X amount of pounds.”

Fad diets help us burn fat… for a while. They don’t help us accomplish sustained results.

What does? A lifelong commitment to healthy eating. What that healthy eating looks like for you may differ from someone else, depending on what you can sustain over your lifetime. There are diets that encourage cheating once a week, which helps raise leptin levels – a hormone that boosts our bodies ability to burn fat.

Myth #3 Long Runs Help You Lose Fat

When most of us think about burning fat, we immediately thing about going for a run, or a bike ride, or joining a spin class. Well, those things won’t help you as much as sprints will. Actually, they’ll do more harm than good when it comes to burning fat and maintaining muscle.

  • Long raise our cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone involved in our fight or flight response to stress – in this case, prolonged physical stress. It makes our bodies use muscle and bone as fuel, storing fat for future emergencies (as a last resort).
  • They also put a lot of stress on our lower back and knees – much more than the alternatives I’ll share with you below.

Sprints, on the other hand…

  • Elevate our human growth hormone levels (HGH), helping us burn more fat, and repair muscle tissue at a much better rate.
  • They also force us to tap into our stored fat for energy and fuel, because of the extreme heart rate levels we experience during a brief, but intense, sprint.

Because of these myths that he helped me avoid. I began getting in the best shape of my life immediately. I began burning fat, and building muscle at a rate that I, nor anyone I knew, had ever done, completely without the use of illegal drugs.
