The modern day hero is the father who is there for his family. He’s the husband who stays faithful to his wife. The person who puts others before himself. The girl who has a crazy idea to help other people instead of simply elevating her own status. The student who raises money for the homeless. The single mother who raises two kids all on her own.
Are these people good people? Yes. Should we admire them? Yes.
Why are they seen as heroes?
Because they are no longer the norm.
We have gotten to the point where we think so little of ourselves and what we can accomplish, that someone who reaches just a tad further than the average person is a hero. 100 years from now, people will be reading about these heroes, watching movies about them. Poor future.
I grew up watching William Wallace take on England, Maximus Decimus Meridius take on the Roman Emperor in the Gladiator. I watched Rambo take on army’s, I read about Joseph being sold as a slave by his brothers, then rising to the height of power in Egypt. Heroes of the past are heroes in the truest sense of the word. this guy’s pretty legit. but here’s my take on what characteristics the ‘ultimate man’ should possess.
Characteristics that a man should possess
First, let me start off by saying that I am in no way the authority of what a real man should be because I think that I possess every single one of these characteristics or values. Each and everyday I learn something new about myself, or even a new way of thinking.
One thing I have definitely learnt over the past year, is that life will humble you. It humbles all of us at one time or another, which is somethin that we either embrace, or we fight. If we resist, and we’re never humbled by ‘these moments’, we’ll never learn.
The first step we must take in becoming the man we are meant to be, is to realize exactly who we are, what our strengths and weaknesses are, and what we can offer the world. I’m not perfect. I’m terribly imperfect, and I’m reminded of it everyday, which allows me plenty of room for growth.
That being said, I’m pretty awesome, and you’re reading this blog, so you’re obviously pretty awesome as well So, I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Here’s another installment of the”7 things” article series, but with a bit of a twist.
7 men who represent what it is to be a real man.
When I think of what a real man is, I think of character, wisdom, resolve, and a guy who knows what’s important in life. He’s not perfect, but he tries his best.
I think of the guy who isn’t afraid to pull up his sleeves and get some work done, the guy who knows how to treat a woman, opens the door for her, protects her and brings home the bacon any way he can. A guy who would stop at nothing to make sure his family is safe and taken care of and a guy who takes pride in how he looks but doesn’t spend hours in front of the mirror getting ready.
He’s the throwback fighter who’ll never back down from a challenge, the ball player who won’t juice to get ahead, and the father who teaches his children about life more by example than words.
He’s a guy who’s proud but humble, loyal and takes a stance when he feels it’s needed. He has morals and he lives by them as best he can. He tries his best each and every day to live in a way he can be proud of. He’s an open book to the one’s he love’s most and the kind of guy that’ll give you the shirt off his back.
These men still exist, much of our fathers and grandfathers have shown us what real men are, but they aren’t a dime a dozen, not that they ever were. They’re a rare and special breed and here are 7 men who represent what it is to be that guy.
There are a few movies that didn’t make the cut because they might be like another movie or they aren’t a necessity for a guy to have. I had to leave out some of my favorites and it hurt me deeply to do so. But I didn’t just pick these movies because I liked them, I chose them because each of them shows us what it is to be a man, or what it is to be a great person. Others show what’s most important in life, and you don’t have to agree, but give respect where respect is due.
Please add in some of the movies I’ve missed in the comments section, I know there are a few gems that could’ve been on here and I’d love to know your thoughts.
For me, this movie embodies what a man is supposed to be, by showing us how he acts when his back is against the wall.
Men have pride, and one of the toughest thing to do for a proud man like James Braddock was go into that room at Madison Square Garden, hat in hand, and ask for some money to get the heat back on so his kids can stay with their parents. Read the rest of this entry »
