How a man views fear will shape his life, his love, and his legacy. From a young age we’re taught to use fear as a gage. If something scares us, we are to stay away from it. If something is safe, we gravitate towards it. We’re taught that fear as a mechanism to keep us safe, to fear strangers, crossing the highway, big animals, new situations, and risk.
We’re taught to use fear to stay safe, unhurt, and alive, by our parents, who were taught to do so by their parents, who were taught to use fear by their parents, and so on, all the way back to the days when you always had to be on the lookout for predators, and your only defense was your mind, your spear, and your fear.
Fear has kept us alive. It’s prevented us from getting kidnapped, hit by a car, and lost at the supermarket. It has also kept us from living. How we view fear has prevented us from taking the risks that, deep down, we’d love to take. It has kept us small and insignificant. It’s kept us cowardly, not courageous. You, like I, are on a mission to create something indelible. We’re not here for mediocrity. We’re not trying to blend in; to be amongst the crowd. We aren’t concerned with being average, with creating average lives, taking the easy path, or building average bodies.
We have the fundamental understanding that life is a gift, one that shan’t be wasted, but also one that can end at any minute. At all times we have this in the back of our minds. It pushes us to work harder, to break through our fears, and to conquer that which holds us back from greatness.
Greatness; we aren’t after fame. Fame isn’t the measure of greatness, but a byproduct of being good at something and being recognized for it. Or, in some cases, fame simply means being popular for no good reason, and of no merit. Nor is it the focus of being Legendary. Within each of us it has its own meaning. Whatever that meaning may be, we must identify it. This is our purpose. It’s greater than anything else in our lives, in that it pushes us to be greater in every other area of our lives. It’s our purpose, our mission, our passion. It’s our great escape.
Not only are we not here to be average and to create an average existence, but we have a stinging distaste for it. We hate mediocrity so passionately that we do everything within our control to ensure that all areas of our life don’t fall under that category. No one will call us an average man, a mediocre parent, an ‘ok’ worker, or a ‘solid’ lover. We’ll have nothing of it. Which brings me to my mission.

My Legendary Evolution
I get emails daily from guys who are where I was. It doesn’t matter their age or place in life, it’s the mentality that I can resonate and empathize with because it wasn’t long ago that I was in their shoes, and there are moments where I am there once again.
Fuck mediocrity. Say that at every opportunity this year. Every time I write an article, workout, buy something, set a goal, book a trip, read an email… I’ll say The hell with mediocrity. No half-assedness, only whole-hearted and purposeful action. No small plans, only gargantuan missions.
The other night my dad made a statement that we’ve all heard before, but need to hear again. Coming from a guy I admire, and one who doesn’t use his words frivolously, it stuck this time more than any other before; It amazes me how short life is.
He may have been looking at me, remembering the child, screaming at the top of my lungs to come to the window as I punched my first bully on the chin, after my dad had told me it was ok to defend myself (I was 4 years old, the other kid was 7, and had been an ass a couple days earlier when my dad told me it was ok to stand up for myself. On that day, however, the kid was being a great guy as I punched him in the kisser without much warning, except for the howls to my dad to come the window and “watch me stand up for myself”. Advice taken to heart, just completely out of context).
He could have been looking at me, in my late 20′s, remembering his own life at this stage. How it feels like it was yesterday, along with decades of other memories that have passed as quickly as our steamy breath on a cold winter’s day. Whatever he was thinking at that moment, he was genuine. And it hit home.
Thus, the decision to start the article with an emphatic mission statement. Nothing wishy-washy. I’d rather offend a few in the process of inspiring many, than play it safe and moderately effect everyone. So, I say Fuck mediocrity. Stick a sword in its gut and watch it bleed to death on the battlefield of life. Kill it without remorse. Fight it. Destroy it. Replace it with greatness.Read the rest of this entry »
Be Legendary. Unconventional Tactics for Life, Work, and Fitness…
Be Legendary says it all. The blog consumed with helping us – the author included – become Legends. Ra’s al Ghul says it best when he tells Bruce Wayne, “if you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal and if they can’t stop you, you become something else entirely – a Legend, Mr. Wayne.”
Our ideal in our lives is still forming, evolving. Just like you and I, it’s a work in progress. The more trials we face, the more successes we experience, the greater our understanding of what it takes to be a Legend, a real man. Who we are today won’t be who we are tomorrow. Well, it will. Never forget where you come from, but to be the man we’re capable of becoming, we have to evolve.
Looking back on this past year, my 27th year on this planet – I celebrated my 27th birthday last weekend – it has been a year of personal evolution. Due to a hefty appetite for reading, and a growing hunger to move further out of my comfort zone, I’ve pushed myself in ways that I have never before. My outlook on business, life, relationships, even trials, worries, and fear, has evolved. In almost every area of my life, I’m proud to say I’ve grown and matured.
Much of this growth is spurred by my desire to live up to the standard I’m creating on the site. Much is due to the insights you provide in the comments and emails I receive every day. Though, I digress, the point of this article isn’t to toot my own horn, but I’m sure you can see this growth imprinted on every article in the last 365 days, just like you can see the finger prints of your evolution in every aspect of your life. There’s no satistfaction, we’re far from that. But there is pride, and much more to be proud of in the future.
Every year I use my birthday as an excuse to do two things:
1. To bring my closest friends together for fine dining, even finer booze, and ample amounts of tear-enducing, gut-busting, abs-shredding laughter. Which, of course, was accomplished yet again this past weekend.
2. To look over my life in the last 365 days, and within the calendar year. Where was I in January with regards to my business, personal and spiritual development, motivation, routine, physique, and health? And where am I now?
The status of being Legendary is reserved for a select few that are revered for what they have accomplished, the men or women that they have become, and what they have given other human beings. The list of true Legends isn’t long. And it’s one of the few words that hasn’t lost its lustre amidst the ever-growing, over-exaggherated vocabulary of our world today.
The word awesome, for example, is meant to be reserved for something that leaves you in a state of awe. Yet it’s used to describe things that occur everyday, or even every minute. Yet those who are referred to as Legends aren’t done so because of exaggeration or inflammation of their deeds or character – as the definition in the dictionary suggests. Rather, they’re referred to as Legends because they have earned it.
What’s scary is that we all have declining aspirations. As we get older, our goals, dreams, and what we deem as realistic changes. Where we wanted to rule the world as kids, we now want security. When we dreamt of finding our dream girl, dream job, and building our dream life, we now settle for whatever comes our way (often whatever comes our way with the least risk and effort in many cases).
“If you make yourself more than just a man. If you devote yourself to an ideal. Then you become something else entirely. A legend, Mr. Wayne. A LEGEND.”
How fitting is that quote from the recently released trailer for, “the Dark Knight Rises” (the new Batman movie) for this site?
Not to mention the emphasis on being a “LEGEND“, which has a lot to do with the theme and mission of ChadHowseFitness.com, but also devoting yourself to something greater than just yourself.
I mention it a lot: the need for an emotional reason when setting a goal – whether that goal is to build lean muscle, improve performance, or to take the very best care of your family as you possibly can; when we have something that drives us to reach that goal that is greater than ourselves or our own self-benefit, we’re literally unstoppable.
