If you think about the alarm clock from a historical perspective, it’s a very recent addition to our daily routine. An unnatural one at that. Until recently I never thought about whether or not I should be waking up to one.
I like getting up early. So I use(d) an alarm close. It also wasn’t a conscious mission to stop waking up to one. Rather an ‘experiment’ done out of pure chance and necessity.
Energy
If I don’t have enough energy, I’m useless. My guess is that you’re at least somewhat the same. I find it difficult or downright impossible to write content that I deem as good enough to make it on this site, or some other site that I’m writing for.
My training also lacks intensity. I’m less successful in every area of my life if I’m tired or lethargic. Focus? Forget it. I’m like a two year-old playing with a toy, when a butterfly whizzes by attracting my attention. After 15 minutes spent chasing the butterfly I remember the toy I was playing with.
I’ll be writing or working on a project, when all of a sudden I desperately want to watch movie trailers. That leads to Jimmy Kimmel clips or footage of old fights. Read the rest of this entry »
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. Jim Rohn
What was once an admirable quality. One that was respected. Admired. Revered. Has taken a backseat to a society and a generation that doesn’t know how to say “no”. A people that forget what it’s like to sacrifice. To do the hard thing rather than opting for the easy. The sexy. The here and now.
I should know. I’m a part of this generation in every way shape and form…
Bleep. Bleep. Bleeeeep.
That last one got me. Smacking the snooze button I stand up. Stretching. Trying my best to reach either side of my room with my fingertips, but as always, falling a few feet short.
It’s 5 o’clock in the morning. I can’t remember where I read it. But a little bird told me that Arturo Gatti – my favorite fighter at the time – wakes to get up at 6 am to run. I’m no Arturo Gatti. The logical thing for me to do was to get up earlier and run farther. It’s 5am and I’m lacing up my running shoes. Stepping out into the dewey, frigid air of a Vancouver morning.
Up before the rest of the world. Just me and the crisp air rejuvenating my lungs every time I take a deep breath. It’s calm. Peaceful. Thoughts have never been so clear. My purpose, never so real. It’s a beautiful day, like every day. Read the rest of this entry »
5:58 am. My eyes crack open. Then close again, unsure if light is what they want to be exposed to right now. Without a thought I sit up like The Undertaker (of WWF fame - here’s what I mean), unaware of the time or the fact that my alarm is 2 minutes from setting off a sound that could make the hardest warrior wince in discomfort.
I’m awake. My arms outstretched, flexing, as I do my best impression of a male lion yawning at daybreak… Minus, of course, the mane he dawns like a king, the deafening roar that gives goosebumps to any would-be prey, or the 8 females he sleeps with that make up his pride.
Today is day #9,697. Of how many, I don’t know. It could be my last. I could have 9,697 more. I could triple or quadruple that number. The uncertainty doesn’t bring fear, but urgency.
I’m not living JUST for today – a great way to be unprepared for tomorrow. But I am living with the knowledge that this could be my last. No arguments are left unresolved. No “goodbye’s” lack a parting smile from both parties. And, maybe most importantly, the day has a definitive purpose.
Some things are worth it.
“Men don’t change, they evolve.” Something Mark Wahlburg said in an interview I once read. It’s true, men are proud, stubborn beings. Some resist change – actually, many of us do – but it’s those who are willing to evolve, and SEEK this evolution that will reach their true potential. Wahlberg’s, the former underwear model, turned rapper, turned actor, turned TV and movie big wig, is a perfect example of this. Read the rest of this entry »
The first meal of our day has been a hot topic over the last while, especially with the rise of intermittent fasting. In the last few months I’ve done protocol’s where I have breakfast, and others where I skip it. If I have it, it usually looks like what I’m about to talk about. If I skip it, the first meal of my day will look like what I’m about to talk about anyways…
So I basically always have breakfast. It’s just that sometimes I have it a few hours after waking up. Again, depending on how my schedule is.
YOUR Breakfast
Our breakfasts are usually high in carbohydrates. Cereal’s dominate our breakfast routine because, well, they taste awesome, the boxes are great reading material, and they save parents from having to actually do something in the morning. Thus, we grow up with high sugar, low protein, and low nutritional value to start the day. Read the rest of this entry »
A few weeks ago I sent out an email asking if you had any questions regarding training, nutrition, or even motivation and work. If you didn’t get the email, here’s how to get in the mix and become a part of something awesome, and get some cool free stuff too: The Real Thor Workout.
The response was huge. A lot of emails and great questions came flooding in and there were some really great questions as well. And I really appreciate the massive response. Many were similar, which makes sense as we struggle from a lot of the same things. So if you don’t read your specific question on the blog, you will see one that’s very similar.
There were too many to answer in one blog post, so we’ll have to break it up into a series.
If you didn’t get a chance to send a question, please ask it in the comments section, I’ll answer all of them.
I’ll keep this short and sweet. My philosophy on diet isn’t too complicated and I don’t think it’s a topic that should be complicated at all. Read the rest of this entry »
