When people talk about a complete, well-rounded fighter, they say “he has a lot of weapons in his arsenal.” But the same can apply to us ‘normal’ guys as well. We also want to be well-rounded, not just having muscle, but lean and athletic muscle. Not just having power, but power that lasts. And not just being in great shape, but being great Dad’s, boyfriend’s, and friends.
You don’t have to be an elite athlete to do the training in the video. Your goal doesn’t just have to be building athletic power – although it will be a side-effect. If you’re looking to build LEAN muscle, or get shredded while improving your athleticism, this type of training is a great method to implement into your routine.
The Breakdown
Circuits of 3 exercises focusing on building power and strength. I added a weight vest with 45 pounds in it for a bit of added resistance, which I suggest doing if you have access to one and you need the added resistance. Complete each circuit 3 times with 45-60 seconds rest in between each set. Read the rest of this entry »
Some say power is something you’re born with and can’t be developed – a statement that I agree with, partially…
There are definitely people who are born with amazing knockout power. Guys like George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Rocky Marciano were blessed with amazing punching power and didn’t need to develop it with any special training. Babe Ruth had pure, natural power, so did Bobby Hull and Lou Gehrig.
But power isn’t something you have to be born with in spades, it can be developed from mediocrity to something more. I think you have to have the capacity to develop it, you have to be athletic to some degree if you want jaw breaking power, but even if you’re not the most athletic guy in the world, you can develop your power to a much more effective point than it is now.
Where does power come from?
Power doesn’t start where it ends. That means that a punch ends with your arms and fist, but you have to go to the beginning to find that source, and then develop it from there.Power – both in a punching, shooting, hitting, and swinging standpoint – originates from our legs and hips.
Neither one or the other – hips or legs – have more to do with effective punching power, but when both are developed properly the effects can be awesome.
I could’ve put a picture of Rocky Marciano here as well. I’m not sure if either him or Jack Dempsey ever took a step back in the ring.

I’m going to take a break from the “Build the Body Women Want” series and give you guys this article. I’ll be back with the chest and back part to that series later this week.
I think a lot of us look at the low points in our lives as the moments that are going to build our character, and they definitely are, but sometimes it’s those moments when things are going better than ever will ultimately show us more about what kind of person we are.
I’ve mentioned it before but I think it’s a great piece of advice from my Dad who has said it on numerous occasions, “don’t get too low when things are bad or too high when things are going well.” I think a lot of that speaks to what kind of character a person has. They are who they are whether or not they literally can’t lose, or if the shit’s hitting the fan.
You hear it all the time, people changing when they ‘make it’. When they get to where they’ve always wanted to be they feel as though they have to act like someone who has it all, and completely forget about the outlook on life and the values that got them to this successful period in their lives.
This can apply to work, social life, family and yes, training and fitness…
When a lot of us get the body we’ve always wanted, or get in great shape, we figure we’re done, we’re here and now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Or when we begin to see some visible gains, we figure we’re allowed to cheat a bit more because, well, we’ve earned it. Read the rest of this entry »
