Russel Crowe as James J. Braddock. A Man’s Man.
The thing’s that get us the best results aren’t new. They aren’t a fad. They haven’t magically popped up out of nowhere and started getting people amazing bodies. They’re grounded in common sense. They’re systems and principles that make sense.
Fads are the enemy of results. They lead to immeasurable amounts of frustration and they empty our pockets. I followed ‘the next big thing’ before. And it kept me scrawny. They’re normally a shiny, or ‘easy’ program that promise big things, but much more often than not, fall short of what they promise.
In no industry does this exist more than the fitness industry. We’ve thrown away iron for rubber. Gone is chalk, and in are lifting straps. Gone is lifting heavy weights and building muscle. And in is weird-looking exercises that promise ‘muscle-confusion’ butdeliver mental confusion.
People make decisions based on a number of reasons. We get married because we love someone. We quit our job to start our own business because of passion. We’re making our own way, following our own path in the name of building a life that we can be truly happy living.
We start working out because we’re unhappy with how we look. We start working out because our Dad had a heart attack at a young age and we don’t want to suffer a similar fate. We walk up to a beautiful girl and start a conversation because in that moment, we realize that this girl – who gives you butterflies just by looking at her – is worth the risk of rejection.
Building your ideal body is a challenge. At its core, getting in awesome shape can be a very simple thing, but the amount of things that can knock us off track if we let them can spell the end in a lot of cases.
We can start out extremely motivated, but end up losing that hunger after only a few weeks. Sometimes we want to get in great shape, but we just don’t know where to start and we never take action. We keep on putting it off until we see it as ‘too late’ to make a change.
To build your dream body – or even to simply get in really good shape – you need consistency, a plan that works but also challenges you, and a motivation plan. You need to strike an emotional chord that keeps you coming back to the gym week after week until it becomes routine.
Knowing that you can accomplish anything, but having the humility to understand that the most important things in life take a crap load of work and dedication, is a great mindset to have.
But to know something, you need proof. And how are you going to truly know you can accomplish anything you truly set your mind to, unless you actually go out and do it? You won’t. You’ll have faith, which is a powerful thing, especially to any entrepreneur, or person embarking on a mission like transforming their body.
I relate building your ideal body to building a business. When you first start a business there’s a lot of risk. You know why you’re doing what you’re doing, and you have faith that your smarts and hard work will one day pay off, but a lot of times you’re on an island. Even the people who are closest to you might not fully see the upside, or the reason why you’re trying to take the road less travelled. But you do.
