So here I stand…
…half way up a volcano in Maui. The lush greenery is like nothing I’ve ever seen – which is saying a lot coming from Vancouver. The weather on the mountain’s nothing to be desired. It’s cold and its wet. Goosebumps cover my skin like spots on a cheetah. But the smile on my face has never been wider.
Due to some wonderful ingenuity, and a fair amount of free time, the owner of the property – the one on the side of the mountain that I’m standing on – has dug a trench down the mountain that winds like a snake as it slithers. He then lined it with a thick, slippery plastic material, and has created one of the coolest water slides I’ve ever seen.
So here I stand, about to go on my 4th or 5th run, each time going faster and faster, and I make a decision; “no holding back this time”, I say to myself… Or maybe I yell it out loud as I pound my chest like a silverback Gorilla… who knows, I can’t remember.
I’m there with a group of 10 or so people. All of whom have done numerous runs down the side of this mountain. Some face first. Others on their back. Others going in groups. All of which is being photographed.
I’ve had some close calls with one of the turns on my previous runs. But this time I decide to let nothing but my heels and my shoulders touch the surface of the waterside. I also decide not to slow down no matter what happens – big mistake.
The gym. You walk in, see an oddly shaped fellow on the bench press. Three plates dawn either side of the bar – a lot of weight, especially considering the guy isn’t that massive by any means.
He presses the weight, stands up, face as red as mine was after I called my first grade teacher “Mom” on my third day of class. He looks like he’s in good shape, not great. Has decent muscle mass, but he doesn’t have the body you’d want.
His shoulders hang forward because he’s so obsessed with this one lift. He’s constantly pressing, always trying to add more weight to his bench press, never going past that 4-6 rep range. He want’s muscle, but he wants to be one of the strong guys in the gym even more. His strength doesn’t seem to dictate how much muscle he has.
So what gives?
He’s clearly strong. I mean the guys pressing 315 lbs for reps. Aren’t strength and muscle directly linked?
Well, to be truthful, no. I mean, yes… but no.
When he’s pressing the weight, he’s focusing on the press – or the concentric contraction. For each set, he only spends 1-2 seconds with his muscles under tension (on the press). After he presses he either brings the weight down as fast as possible, as to not waste any power resisting gravity, or racks the weight.
The first meal of our day has been a hot topic over the last while, especially with the rise of intermittent fasting. In the last few months I’ve done protocol’s where I have breakfast, and others where I skip it. If I have it, it usually looks like what I’m about to talk about. If I skip it, the first meal of my day will look like what I’m about to talk about anyways…
So I basically always have breakfast. It’s just that sometimes I have it a few hours after waking up. Again, depending on how my schedule is.
YOUR Breakfast
Our breakfasts are usually high in carbohydrates. Cereal’s dominate our breakfast routine because, well, they taste awesome, the boxes are great reading material, and they save parents from having to actually do something in the morning. Thus, we grow up with high sugar, low protein, and low nutritional value to start the day. Read the rest of this entry »
Take a look at the letter V. Then take a look at the guy below – on the right… and sorry Batman…
The thick traps (semi-covered by the cape) that slope down into the extremely broad shoulders. The shoulders that are pulled back and sit on muscular lats which then taper down to the waist. Each of the above components make this waist appear much smaller.
This is the V. This is the ideal physique for men (an X shape if you count the lower body), and this is what I’m going to help you achieve in this article, and the following series.
