Lessons from Ray Lewis

Ray Lewis. Fighter.
Life is like water. Like water shaped the majestic scenery that is the Grand Canyon, life will shape each of us in it’s own unique way. Ray Lewis didn’t have an easy life, sometimes he didn’t make it any better through his own actions, but he took the gifts he was given and made the absolute most out of them that he possibly could. Something that you can’t say for 99.9% of the people in this world.
Everyone can teach us something, there aren’t many – if any – exceptions to this. In Ray Lewis we have a guy who has an understanding that the clock of life is always ticking. He’s a guy who truly realizes that pure hard work is one of the few things that can change our status in life.
I didn’t know it until recently, but he’s also a guy that we can all learn a lot from. The following are a few examples of this.
Real Success is Earned. Never Think Otherwise.
When he was at the University of Miami, Ray told a reporter that he was going to be the greatest football player in the history of the school. A school that is extremely rich in talented, successful players that went on to have illustrious careers in the NFL. Pretty brash comments coming from a player who hadn’t even seen a snap in the NFL.
When we hear comments like this, we think of why we would make such comments. He must be cocky, arrogant, and overconfident. But Ray had a different line of thinking. He made those comments because he knew that he was going to work harder than any other player in the history of that program ever had. There weren’t any “if’s” in his line of thinking. It was fact.
He believed in the power of hard work. That if he worked harder than everyone, even though he wasn’t the biggest, fastest, or most talented, he’d be more successful than everyone.
Ray Lewis earned his success. He did work harder than everyone.
The interesting thing is, we all have that capacity. I know that if I fail, it’s because I didn’t work hard enough. Ray didn’t even leave that option. He understood that hard work is maybe the most valuable thing in the world.
And so, success in it’s true sense can only be earned. We can be given things. Awarded something that we achieved more because of luck or position in the world than hard work, but there’s no fulfillment in this. The pride of knowing that we made the most of our talents doesn’t exist unless it’s earned.
Real success isn’t winning the life lottery – or the literal lottery – it’s overcoming obstacles. Success is the result of hard work, sacrifice, and a belief in ourself when no one else will.
Understanding this is freedom. Once we understand that true success is earned, all we have to do is line up our talents with an un-matched work ethic.
Time Stops for No One.
How much time are you really wasting? Ray Lewis
There’s a lot of stuff in our lives that we can control – much more than we give ourselves credit for actually – but one thing we have no control over is time.
A truth that some see as scary and fighting, is that with every single breath we take, we’re moving closer to death. As I’m writing this article, Old Fashioned cocktail in hand, I’m closer to dying than I was when I started it. Is that scary or motivating? Is that a curse or is it a gift?
I don’t see how it can be seen as anything but a gift. Imagine having an infinite amount of time. Nothing would get done. There would be no urgency. No appreciation for what we have an who we have in our lives. Death is a gift. It’s a blessing to know that the moments I spend with my family are numbered. I have to appreciate them more because of it.
Ray Lewis has a unique understanding of time. He understands that our time is limited. We only have a certain amount of time to carve out a Legacy. I’m sure this is something that has been festering as he gets older, but by his accounts, he’s had this understanding since he was young.
Everyone’s time is ticking. I’m pretty damn thankful for that.
Leave a Legacy.
Life isn’t about wins and losses. It’s about what you can leave, it’s about the Legacy you can leave. Ray Lewis
When I think about what I want, success, happiness, a wife, kids, a family of my own, health and other things come to mind. But when I think about how I want to be remembered, what mark I want to leave the world, or the man I want to become, a completely different thought process exists.
It’s no longer about me, it’s about you. It’s about every single person I will come in contact with in my life. We run into so many people in our lifetime. People we’ll never remember. People whom we will remember and form friendships with. Ray talks about his responsibility to leave the world a better place by having an impact – a positive one – on as many people as you possibly can.
Success is A Bunch of Small Things Done Great.
Some people will have big, massive ideas that will make them a lot of money or impact the world in a big way. But those people are very rare. I’m not saying that you or I aren’t one of them. But in the meantime, aside from being open to those opportunities, focus on the little things and do a great job with them.
Using myself as an example, I put extra effort into my videos, proofreading articles, researching articles, business, marketing, and fitness in order to help you guys better. The higher the quality the information I put out, the greater an impact it will have.
The more I focus on the little things and doing a great job at them, the more success I have with the bigger things.

Chad, if you wrote an article like this sipping an Old Fashioned, I would start drinking more. Seriously, this is a hell of a post, very well written, with great advice. We must live at least some of our life with a sense of urgency because our time on Earth is indeed limited. Without a sense of urgency, that one big thing (your legacy project) never gets done. And Ray Lewis? Please…the guy’s an animal. The only modern player that reminds me of the maniac LT on those Giants teams I loved so much growing up…
I’ve followed you for a while, and your writing has really come a long way. You are an example of work and effort. Keep pushing!
haha thanks Joe, not sure if I need another excuse to have an Old Fashioned…
Reading up on Steve Jobs lately, he's another guy that understood this, largely due to his illness. But look how much he achieved in the latter phase of his life. I think it's a very healthy and beneficial outlook to have.
Thanks for the kind words!
Nice Article!
Chad can we have a blog that cover's a week in your life.Your workout's ,your source of motivation, your new goals, with a couple of your pics…..
That would be awsome…
That's a great idea, I'll put that on the list. I have a lot of articles coming up but I'll squeeze that in there.
Thanks for the idea!
Great post as always, Chad. Yes, I second that your writing is just getting better and better each week. Your site has become a great source of great ideas in fitness and life.
Thanks Brad, it's great to hear the feedback I appreciate it bro.
Great writing Chad, and it's awesome that you wrote an article about Ray Lewis! Easily my favorite player in the NFL, and not just cause of his success on the field, but by how great he is off the field as well. His combination of strength, skill, work ethic, sheer determination, and ability to motivate have made him a legend both on the field and off. A great person I look up to and try to emulate. His workout video on youtube always gets me pumped for my workout! …oh and the ravens are lookin really good this season! Heck yeah!
Glad you liked the article Miguel – and ya the Ravens are looking pretty good!
Raw Lewis is an inspiring guy. Being from Pittsburgh, I dislike the Ravens, but he's just too good to have bad feelings for.
